by Ann M. Martin
One day Kristi Thomas' mom is calling everywhere to find a babysitter and Kristy has an idea-what if you could call one number and talk to a group of babysitters? From there she founds the Babysitters Club with her friends Claudia, Stacy, and Mary Anne (my favorite.) The club eventually expands to ten members and together they face all the trials and joys of growing up. Rather than summarize plots, I'm going to give a brief bio of each character
Kristy Thomas-bossy but inventive. She's the creator of the babysitters club and the best business mind of the group
Claudia Kishi-independent and artistic. Sometimes she struggles with how her Asian-American heratige makes her different from her friends and peers.
Stacey McGill-stylish and blunt. Stacey moved from New York and has a hard time adjusting to small town life and learning to control her Type I diabetes.
Mary Anne Spier-Kristy's best friend. Mary Anne is kind and intelligent, but very quiet. She struggles to live up to the expectations of her single father
Dawn Schafer-just moved from California after her parents divorce. Her lifestyle is very different from the small Connecticut town and the whole club struggles with her changing the status quo
Mallory Pike-the oldest of a large family, Mallory is self conscious about her appearance and an aspiring author
Jessica Ramsey-struggles against the racism of the town initially, Jessi is a talented dancer and eventually becomes the most understanding character in the series (in my opinon)
Shannon Kilbourne-overachiever who attends a private school, unlike the other girls. Initally competitive with Kristy, the two end up as close friends.
Abby Stevensen-recently moved back to Connecticut after the death of her father, something she's rather not talk about. Her multitude of allergies make it hard for her to be involved with her clubmates, but they learn to manage.
Audience:
Teenage girls. These are the perfect leap into middle grade reading for girls.
What I Love:
1) All these girls are cool. Each and every one of them is endearing and distinct from the others with real-world struggles.
2) This series doesn't shy away from some of the tougher issues-divorce, death, health problems, but it's all done from a perspective of writing for middle schoolers.
Cautions:
I haven't read all of these, they started to feel a little repetitive to me.
