Wayside School

by Louis Sachar

Wayside School was supposed to be 30 classrooms straight acorss, but someone messed up and made it 30 stories high with one classroom on each story.  This is about the kids on the top floor and their zany teacher. Everything in this book doesn't make sense, except it does.  There's really no way to describe it.  If you enjoy heartwarming outrageousness, this is for you

Audience:
Third on up are completely captivated.  When I did the motions in one chapter, every last one was moving with me.

What I Love:
This book has relevance to the kids.  Every issue addressed, identity, kindness, etc, are very real to students.
Every chapter is its' own story, so kids that were absent didn't loose the thread.
All the 27 students are distinct and memorable

Cautions:
This is a crazy story, suspend all disbelief at the door.
There are lots of characters

Charmed Life

by Dianna Wynne Jones

Cat doesn't mind living in Gwendolyn's shadow, she is the most powerful witch in the world after all.  When she is summoned to Chrestomanci Castle to train as the next Chrestomanci, she pitches a fit .  She doesn't want the current Chrestomanci anywhere near her.  She has a secret, one about both her and Cat, that she can't stand anyone finding out.

Audience:
Twelve and up for reading level, eight and up for content

What I Love:
All the characters are so clever and enjoyable.  They had me lauging out loud and rolling my eyes more than once.

Cautions:
This is a really slow moving novel.  Until it was at the climax I wasn't that in to it.  Howl's Moving Castle is still my favorite by far of all her books.

The Nine Lives of Christopher Chant

by Dianna Wynne Jones

Christopher Chant has very vivid dreams about going to other places, just like a lot of people.  Unlike a lot of people, when he gets back his clothes still have the dirt of the other places.  When his uncle finds out about this unique gift, he sends Christopher to all sorts of cool places to collect...something.  He doesn't know what he's getting, but he has lots of fun doing it.  And in this one place, there's this one girl that...enough said.  He meets lots of people and realizes the world is so much bigger than even he thought.

Audience:
Teen, mostly.  The book is too slow to hold the interest of children

What I Love:
Christopher is so charming.  All the characters are very real, even when they're kind of ridiculous   This is a fun light read.

Cautions:
1) This is not one I'd stay up all night reading, it's a lot slower than that
2) These books are not a series so much as companions.  There are recurring characters, but the main character is different in each book.

Christmas Trolls

by Jan Brett

Trolls, in an attempt to have the Christmas they see at Treva's house, start stealing Christmas decorations.  It doesn't bring them happiness because the trolls are quarelsome and have no idea what the holidays are about.  When Treva finds them, she sets them straight and together everyone enjoys a happy Christmas

Audience:
I'd go 1st grade on up with this one

What I Love:
The illustrations are breathtaking and the story is heartwarming.  Jan Brett's famous borders are great in this, so pay attention to them.

Cautions:
This is slower than you'd expect from a children's book

Town Mouse Country Mouse

by Jan Brett

Town Mouse and Country Mouse are best friends who visit each other.  It's exciting to be in a new place, but both decide they's rather live in their own home.

Audience:
I'd go 1st grade on up with this one

What I Love:
The illustrations are breathtaking and the story is heartwarming.  Jan Brett's famous borders are great in this, so pay attention to them.

Cautions:
This is slower than you'd expect from a children's book

Annie and the Wild Animals

by Jan Brett

When Annie's cat disappears, she sets out food to get her back.  She is surprised when the local wildlife responds instead, but starts welcoming anything that sets foot in the yard.  I think it's set in Alaska.

Audience:
Kindergartners love it, so did my 4th graders

What I Love:
Jan Brett's books always have intricate borders and wonderful illustrations

Cautions:
This isn't Christmas, but it's definitely winter

The Boggart

by Susan Cooper

This is a very cute children's book.  I expected it to be more adult considering that this is the author of The Dark is Rising but what I got was a charming children's story about a young girl and her adventures with a boggart.  His victim, Emily, turns out to be unscarable, but together they come up with a lot of fun ideas to scare the living daylights out of the community

Audience:
3rd-5th grade

What I Love:
The whole story is just charming.  I think it's the only children's story I've ever read (except Anne) that takes place in Canada.

Cautions:
This is one of the stories where the kids get away with murder.  There are some consequences, but overall their mischief is celebrated.  Also, there are some pretty dumb grown-ups

Harry Potter

by J. K. Rowling

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet.  Harry Potter learns on his 11th birthday that he is actually a wizard, and a famous one at that.  Apparently he killed the most powerful dark wizard that ever was as a mere infant on the night his parents were killed, so after a lifetime of neglect he is embraced by the wizarding world as their savior.  Harry quickly makes both friends and enemies at Hogwarts.  With natural talent in some areas, popularity in others, and good judgement in friends (if nothing else), Harry quickly finds his place at HogwartsIt's obvious not everything is as it seems, and as time goes on it becomes clear that the battle didn't end with Harry's miraculous night, and things are going to get worse before they get better

Audience:
The series starts when Harry is eleven and the content and reading level match his current age in each of the books.  These are at least as popular with adults as the intended audience

What I Love:
1) The characters are all very real.  The children are well developed and in character for their ages, and the adults are amazing as well.
2) You see the protagonists fail from time to time and choose how they are going to take it.
3) For such a serious story, this has plenty of humor

Cautions:
1) I'm always hesitant to recommend this to kids because you are ready to start the series at 11 but the content of the last book is inappropriate for anyone below 15- it deals with the effect of murder on the human soul.
2) Be warned, characters die.  Frequently.  And I'm not just talking about the bad guys either.

Series:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Philosophers Stone in the UK)
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows

Baby-Sitters Club

by Ann M. Martin

One day Kristi Thomas' mom is calling everywhere to find a babysitter and Kristy has an idea-what if you could call one number and talk to a group of babysitters?  From there she founds the Babysitters Club with her friends Claudia, Stacy, and Mary Anne (my favorite.)  The club eventually expands to ten members and together they face all the trials and joys of growing up.  Rather than summarize plots, I'm going to give a brief bio of each character

Kristy Thomas-bossy but inventive.  She's the creator of the babysitters club and the best business mind of the group

Claudia Kishi-independent and artistic.  Sometimes she struggles with how her Asian-American heratige makes her different from her friends and peers.

Stacey McGill-stylish and blunt.  Stacey moved from New York and has a hard time adjusting to small town life and learning to control her Type I diabetes.

Mary Anne Spier-Kristy's best friend.  Mary Anne is kind and intelligent, but very quiet.  She struggles to live up to the expectations of her single father

Dawn Schafer-just moved from California after her parents divorce.  Her lifestyle is very different from the small Connecticut town and the whole club struggles with her changing the status quo

Mallory Pike-the oldest of a large family, Mallory is self conscious about her appearance and an aspiring author

Jessica Ramsey-struggles against the racism of the town initially, Jessi is a talented dancer and eventually becomes the most understanding character in the series (in my opinon)

Shannon Kilbourne-overachiever who attends a private school, unlike the other girls.  Initally competitive with Kristy, the two end up as close friends.

Abby Stevensen-recently moved back to Connecticut after the death of her father, something she's rather not talk about.  Her multitude of allergies make it hard for her to be involved with her clubmates, but they learn to manage.

Audience:
Teenage girls.  These are the perfect leap into middle grade reading for girls.

What I Love:
1) All these girls are cool.  Each and every one of them is endearing and distinct from the others with real-world struggles.
2) This series doesn't shy away from some of the tougher issues-divorce, death, health problems, but it's all done from a perspective of writing for middle schoolers.

Cautions:
I haven't read all of these, they started to feel a little repetitive to me.

Princess Academy

by Shannon Hale

Miri gets word very suddenly that the Prince's bride will come from their rural area, so all the elegible young women are sent to a "Princess Academy."  Lifelong camaraderie is challenged when the girls find themselves in competition, but Miri is determined that the strength of the community can overcome anything, even this jealousy.  Add to this the untapped powers of the mountain they live on, and it's an epic coming of age fantasy.

Audience:
Girls about 3rd grade and up, but the reading level is around 5th grade

What I Love:
The girls are all so smart and strong, not to mention independent.  They are also about as awkward as teenagers.

Cautions:
This is written younger than her other books.  There are almost no male protagonists.

Draw Me a Star

by Eric Carle

This book just makes me feel happy.  A daughter asks her artist father to draw her a star and a world, which he does.  It's the perfect for a parent to read at bedtime

Audience:
This one's a little older.  I'd go about 4-8

What I Love:
This book just makes me feel happy inside.  It's all about a father's love for his daughter.  Plus, Eric Carle did the illustrations

Cautions:
Eric Carle's books are for young children, but this one is a bit older than the others

A House for Hermit Crab

by Eric Carle

A hermit crab has outgrown his home and needs a new one.  He tries to go bigger and better, but eventually finds the just right home.

Audience:
Children who are too young to read themselves-this is the perfect bedtime story

What I Love:
This story is so sweet and so pretty.

Cautions:
This is a young children's book

The Mixed-Up Chameleon

by Eric Carle

A chameleon can be anything it wants to be, and this little chameleon tries to be many different things before finding the best choice: Herself

Audience:
Little children through about second grade.  Once they are old enough to read chapter books they won't want this

What I Love:
The illustrations are so simple yet so fascinating

Cautions:
This is for young kids

The Grouchy Ladybug

by Eric Carle

There's always a bigger bully out there.  The grouchy ladybug tries to be the biggest, meanest thing in the neighborhood.  Unfortunately she's a bit small.  You need to be a friend to have a friend, and she learns that by the end

Audience:
Toddlers through 2nd grade

What I Love:
It's Eric Carle.  It looks great and the story is sweet.

Cautions:
This is a little kids book

The Very Quiet Cricket.

by Eric Carle

Just because you don't sound like everyone else, you shouldn't hold back what you have.  The Quiet Cricket learns to embrace his individuality

Audience:
Toddlers through second graders will enjoy this.  Older grades will feel like they are being talked down to.

What I Love:
The illustrations are beautiful (it's Eric Carle) and the message is very timely

Cautions:
This is a little kids book

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

by Eric Carle

This is one of the first books I ever read, and I still love it now.  It's about a caterpillar that eats and eats and eats until the day it makes itself a Christlike and becomes a butterfly

Audience
I've seen this one in a board book for toddlers, and I think anyone through second grade would love it.

What I Love:
The pictures are all gorgeous, and I love the hidden lesson about nutrition.  When the caterpilar eats healthy, he feels good.  When he eats junk, he feels miserable.

Cautions:
It's written for young children.  This one doesn't have the All Ages tag

James and the Giant Peach

by Roald Dahl

James lived a happy life until he was about 5.  Then his parents were killed by a stampeding rhinoceros and he had to live with his Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, who hate him.  They lived together for another 5 years until James was given something to make his "dreams come true."  Not understanding how to use it, he accidentally spends the magic wish making a Giant Peach on the Aunt's tree.  It doesn't take him long to recognize the peach as an escape, or to recognize that he isn't alone in the peach-the bugs are bigger too, just like the peach.  For the first time in his life, James has friends.  Together they cross the ocean, conquer all manner of challenges, and form life-long friendships.

Audience
I read it in 4th grade and that was a bit young.  I'd give it to 5th up to middle school.  I read it with some of my students and I love it even more as an adult

What I Love
It's funny and insightful.  The characters are easily lovable and all the problems are pretty funny.

Cautions
The grown-ups are the bad guys, as with everything Roald Dahl writes.  The problems are very fantasy oriented and suspension of disbelief will be hard if you're not prepared to swallow everything.

Castle in the Attic

by Elizabeth Winthrop

It's been a lot of years since I read this one, so I'm copying and pasting the summary from wikipedia, but I loved this book as a kid.  As soon as the reserve comes in from the library I'm reading it again.

William is given a realistic model of a castle by the housekeeper, Mrs. Philips, who tells him that it has been in her family for many many years and that its silver knight is said to be under a spell. The silver knight, Sir Simon, comes to life and tells William stories about olden times and an evil wizard who is ruling his kingdom. Desperate to stop Mrs. Philips from going away, William has Sir Simon shrink her with a magic token he stole from the wizard, Alastor. However, William and Sir Simon lack the ability to return Mrs. Philips to her true size as the half of the token that can do so is with Alastor, and Mrs. Philips falls into a depression. Learning of a legend that states that when there is a lady, a knight, and a squire, a quest can be undertaken to stop Alastor, William decides to become a squire to undo his mistake. As he will be shrunk willingly, he will return to his world at the exact moment he left, but Mrs. Philips will lose all the time she spent in the castle until William enters. William has Sir Simon shrink him and he enters the castle to join his two friends.

Audience
I think once you are a fluent reader you can read this (3rd grade or so)

What I Love:
This all makes sense!  There's a reason William is so good at medieval skills, and the magic is even logical.  It's easy to believe and the characters are all endearingly flawed.  I can barely remember the story, but I remember well how much I love Sir Simon.  This is one of those books everyone tells me gets better when you read

Caution:
This is heavy medieval fantasy.  If it's not your cup of tea move on

Brotherband Chronicles

by John Flanagan

Ahh memories, memories.  This is a continuation of the series that inspired this book.  Honestly, I love the Rangers Apprentice Series and I love this one even more.  It's about a group of boys in Scandia coming together for the Brotherband Games.  In Scandia this is how boys are trained for the tasks they will assume as Vikings (I mean Scandians.)  The main character, Hal, is half Araluen and half Scandian.  He rallies the misfits of the age bracket and figures out how to make them an unbreakable team.

Audience
These are written for middle grades (6-8) and should appeal to anyone ages 11-16.

What I Love:
These characters are so heartwarming and crazy at the same time.  I love that the boys are all different and have to work to overcome conflict.  Erak is a frequent character, and the adults of this series are as charming as the children.  I laugh out loud at some of the dialogue and I'm frequently holding my breath hoping the characters will make the right choice.  The writing in these is much improved from the Rangers Apprentice

Cautions:
The female characters, where they exist, are pretty minor.  The romance-don't read for that.  Read for fun and adventure.

Bearenstien Bears

by Stan and Jan Bearenstien

These stories are about Mama and Papa Bear, their two cubs, Brother and Sister Bear, and their little community.  These are geared around life lessons and the ups and downs of growing up.  Personally, if the Bearenstien Bears have a book on it, I wouldn't mind using it to teach.  Several of the books are from a Christian perspective, but if it doesn't mention religion in the title, it's usually safe to use in schools

Audience
2nd-5th grade.  They are written for 3rd graders to read independently  and the lessons (such as nightmares) stay pertinent through life.

Why I Love It:
It can be hard to tackle life lessons like stranger dangers and bullying with children, and these books are amazing.  They do the perfect job of being serious without being scary.  They're a loving family that fight and make up all the time.

Cautions
Some of the books are religious
